An Eco-Friendly Lunar Calendar since 1990!
This Lunar Phase Calendar was originally made and published 21 years ago in 1988 for the year 1989.
Making these
posters by hand back then gave us direct insight on how toxic
printing inks can be to the environment. So in 1990 we began
printing these on 100% recycled paper with soy based inks.
The original
artwork for this print is still drawn by hand each year, and the
print is published by the artists who
create it. The dates used to chart out the position of the lunar phases in this graphic are obtained from the Circular published by the Nautical Almanac Office at the U.S. Naval Observatory for the years 2000-2049. This information can be found online at the following url: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/MoonPhase.php#y2010 The dates used are based on Universal Time, also known as Greenwich Mean Time. We like to alter one small thing in the design each year to keep things interesting. It may be something only the artist would know, or something more noticeable, but never very dramatic. Gradual changes, like the phases of the moon, help us to express growth and continued originality in design. An example of one simple yet obvious refinement made in 2005 for the '06 is around the new moon, which went from no graphic at all to a thin circle around the darkened new moon to indicate it is indeed there on the date the new moon occurs. On years when a new moon falls on the last day of the month, the artists' reasoning becomes apparent. We invite you to figure out what small changes we make form year to year, if you can't find them and simply must know, email us and we will tell you! This is a printed reproduction of an original hand drawn graphic. No attempt is made to hide this fact in the production of the print. Upon careful inspection we hope you will appreciate the careful, precise hand drawn quality that goes into this print each year.
